In the midst of an unexpected diplomatic crisis, Ecuador declared the Argentine ambassador in Quito, Gabriel Fuks, “persona non grata” this Tuesday, after the escape of former Rafael Correa minister convicted of corruption, María de los Ángeles Duarte.

In a note, the Ecuadorian Ministry of Foreign Relations said that “the mutual trust and good faith that must prevail in the relationship between States have been violated.”
Duarte fled from the Argentine embassy, where she was taking refuge, and appeared in Caracas on Tuesday. Guillermo Lasso’s government said that the diplomatic delegation refused to hand over the surveillance videos from the security cameras.
What the official note from the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry says
The note was released this Tuesday night through the Twitter account of the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry.
The statement stated that “in relation to the circumstances surrounding the new contempt for decisions of the Ecuadorian justice by Mrs. María Duarte, sentenced for committing acts of corruption, the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry has concluded that trust has been violated and the good faith that must prevail in the relationship between States”.

The note affirmed that “by virtue of this, the Government of Ecuador has decided, protected by article 9 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, to declare the Argentine ambassador in Quito, Gabriel Fuks, “persona non grata.”
Finally, he pointed out that “the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry reiterates the firm commitment of the Ecuadorian State to act in accordance with the principles of International Law and to permanently ensure the high interests of the country, respect for sovereignty and the rule of law and against of impunity”.
