A high-ranking envoy from the US State Department will embark on a diplomatic visit to South American countries, including Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay. The purpose of this visit is to deepen economic cooperation and strengthen strategic partnerships, particularly in the areas of mineral supplies and energy.
President Joe Biden recently pledged to mobilize billions of dollars for a new investment platform aimed at countering China’s influence in the region. The initiative was presented at an Americas meeting at the White House, where Biden emphasized the importance of offering countries in South America an alternative to what he termed “debt-trap diplomacy” employed by China.
During the visit, the US envoy, Jose W. Fernandez, will engage in discussions with government officials to explore various avenues of economic collaboration. This includes topics such as trade, investment, and the development of robust mineral supply chains to facilitate the acceleration of clean energy transition in the region.
In addition to these bilateral discussions, preparations for the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit will also be on the agenda. The envoy will join energy officials from Latin American countries in Uruguay to explore opportunities for expanding investment in the region’s energy transition efforts.
This diplomatic trip underscores the United States’ commitment to fostering stronger ties with South American nations and promoting economic development in the region. By bolstering partnerships and exploring avenues for cooperation, both the US and South American countries can benefit from increased economic growth and technological advancements in sectors such as clean energy.
