The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard (TTCG) is searching for Venezuelan nationals after a vessel sank Friday morning.
In a media release, the TTCG said a vessel carrying a number of Venezuelan nationals sank off the First Boca of Trinidad.
From initial reports, the vessel left Las Cuevas Bay sometime after midnight Thursday, en route to Venezuela. Sometime after, the vessel could not be accounted for.
Shortly after sunrise Friday, at least three people were rescued from the waters off the coast.
These efforts were undertaken by officials from the Trinidad and Tobago inter-island ferry, the Buccoo Reef, as well as local fishermen.
Hunt for survivors
The TTCG said that up to 5 p.m. yesterday, the Coast Guard’s Maritime Operations Command Centre was actively engaged in search-and-rescue operations in the area to confirm the information received and to locate survivors.
“Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of all involved.
“The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard remains committed to providing border security and search and rescue services in order to maintain the safety and security of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago through the conduct of maritime security patrols within our area of operations,” the Coast Guard added.
